Notes From the 2011 National Junior Olympics

I don't really do too many editorials on this site because I just like to present the facts and video, but with so much attention (albeit warranted) given to the Olympic trials this week, I wanted to shed some light on the future of Olympic boxing. There were many great young boxers showcased this year at the 2011 National Junior Olympics, but I came away with a few that I want to highlight.

First of all, I want to again congratulate the 3 DC area boxers that came back with titles: Gervonta "Tank" Davis, Malik Jackson and Kareem Martin. All of these young men worked hard to get it done. I recorded as many bouts as Icould, but here are my thoughts on boxers that made an big impression on me. They arelisted in no particular order:

Nico Hernandez - wins his first National Junior Olympic title in his first attempt after winning 5 consecutive National Silver Gloves. Nico is a nice young man and I always enjoy watching him box and talking to him and

his dad/coach. He showed why he's a national champion against a tough, older boxers in Melik Elliston from Colorado. Plain and simple, Nico is a winner. He also is a varsity letterman in Cross Country.

Erickson "Hammer" Lubin - I've been watching Hammer for about 7 years because he is from my Silver Gloves Region and he has continued to improve his skills. He along w/ Julian Rodriguez had the biggest margins of victories that I saw all week at the Junior Olympics. In his three bouts, he outscored his opponents 101-18!!! Again, a very nice young man and I believe that there is a direct correlation between being a successful athlete and being personable and coachable--so it might be repetitive but I will keep commending these boxers' character because it's very important to me that people know that these boxers are well-rounded athletes.

Julian Rodriguez - WOW. That's all I can say about Julian. After losing in the Junior Olympic finals last year, he made no doubts about who was the best this year. When he is in the ring, he only knows one mode: attack. I was really looking forward to seeing him in action againsts Joey Alday because Alday caught my eye in the Silvers Gloves-- but Julian was just too much. He's a machine in the ring and simply overwhelms his opponents with beautiful and precise combinations of power shots on the inside and out--from various angles. Julian will make an IMMEDIATE impact in the open division, in my opinion.

Ja'Rico O'Quinn - Ok, so I've never really payed attention to this kid, but he made me regret that because he put on a power clinic against multiple National Silver Gloves champion Hector Valdez. O'Quinn just imposed his will and he has an aire of confidence when he is in the ring. He's definintely on my radar now. I apologize Mr. O'Quinn. Please forgive my ignorance.

Jesus Luna - Again, multiple Silver Gloves titles makes for a successful Junior Olympic boxer. Like Nico Hernandez, Jesus is just a winner who keeps on winning. A very aggressive boxer, who is small in stature but attacks opponents with a calculated offensive attack. I've didn't have a chance to speak with him this week, but I know that I'll see him around for many more years.

Rahim Gonzalez - If you want to see a boxing clinic, watch Rahim Gonzalez. He is an artist at work in the ring. He put on a clinic staying on the outside and using his height (he's one of the two tallest 95 lbs. boxers I've ever seen), while almost literally not getting hit. I think the score of his first bout that I watched was 20-1. His finals matchup was an ugly wrestling match but he showed poise in doing what he had to do to get the victory. Again, a very very very personable and nice young man. Always look forward to speaking with him at tournaments.

Malik Jackson - The quiet storm is what I call Malik because he is so soft spoken outside of the ring, but he is very aggressive inside. The fact that he has won Outstanding Boxer two years in a row at the JOs speaks for itself. He continues to improve his game and I look forward to seeing him in the open division soon.

Rashida Ellis - Ok, I know that I already said WOW, but I have to say it again. This young lady can box. Period. Let me rephrase that. This young person can box. She is a great boxer, no matter what gender. I enjoyed watching her and during her three bouts she left no doubt about who the winner was. I didn't get a chance to speak with her but I know that I will be seeing her at more nationals. That is guaranteed.

Ok, so I lied saying that this was in no particular order because I'm going to be transparent with my bias and say that I left my favorite for last. . . Gary Salazar. I just may be his biggest fan. I've watched Gary step up against the best and handle each of them over and over again - impressively and in different fashion - through the National Silver Gloves and now the Junior Olympics. Gary can box, Gary can bang, Gary can move, Gary can think. I've seen him go to war (vs. Neslan Machado) and I've seen him beat slick boxers (D'andres Hockerson and Shawn Simpson) and he continues to amaze me. He's on another level in the amateur boxing game and I can't wait until he turns open to see if he can follow or exceed what the two most recent JO-to-Open success stories have done - Shawn Simpson and O'Shanique Foster. Again, Gary is another class act. An extremely personable and nice young man who also happens to be the only 16-year-old smog technician in CA and he's very proud of that fact!! He has told me (and I believe him) that the 114/119/132 boxers better get ready. . . he's coming.

Again, I just wanted to share my thoughts with the group because we have been talking so much about the trials, I wanted to give our future Olympians some time too. They deserve some of the spotlight too.

US Olympic Team Finals Results

The US Olympic Team Trials ended this evening with all 10 boxers keeping their undefeated streaks intact throughout this week. Rau'shee Warren becomes the first boxer in US history to make three Olympic Teams (2004, 2008) as he starts his journey towards his first Olympic Medal. Michael Hunter also repeats as a 2008 US Olympic Team member who will be vying for his first trip to the games. Hunter was unable to qualify for the Beijing Games. Raynell Williams, a 2008 US Olympic Team member was defeated by Jose Ramirez ending his hopes of repeating along with Warren and Hunter. Congratulations to all of our boxers. They will compete in the World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan Sept 22 - October 10.

2011 National Junior Olympic Champions Crowned!!!

DC area boxers Kareem Martin (Headbangers), Gervonta Davis (Upton in Baltimore) and Malik Jackson (Lime Lite) were crowned 2011 National Junior Olympic Champions--the best 15 and 16-year-old boxers in the United States in their respective weigh divisions. Davis lost last year to the eventual champion, Joet Gonzalez, so this year was especially nice. Davis add the title to a list of accomplishments that include the National Silver Gloves as well. Kareem Martin wins the crown on his first attempt. He will also be eligible to compete next year. Malik Jackson repeats as not only the National Junior Olympic Champion but also as the Most Outstanding Boxer as voted by tournament officials. I am going to go out on a limb and state that no one has ever done that from this area in the history of the Junior Olympic tournament. Congrats to all three young men, who are also very humble.

A side note about one of our boxers Daquan Johnson who fell victim to the new ESS (electronic scoring system) which takes a calculated average of sorts of the three most similar scores out of the 5 judges. 4 out of 5 judges had Johnson scoring more blows than his opponent over the course of the bout, which in year's past with paper scoring would have given him the victory. However, through the accepted score he lost by 1pt. Johnson's opponent went on to win the title this afternoon.

Mike Reed Wins 2011 National Golden Gloves

Mike Reed (Dream Team Boxing) of Waldorf, MD defeated George Rincon (Texas) 4-1 in the championship bout of the 2011 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. By doing so, Reed earned a spot at the upcoming US Olympic Team Trials to be held later this summer in Colorado. That tournament will determine the 2012 London US Olympic Boxing Team.

Jerry Odom (NoXcuse Boxing) also competed in the finals today at 178lbs. but lost a close bout 3-2 to Caleb Plant (Knoxville).

Denver's "King" Louie Byrd (Backyard Brawlers) won his 4th consecutive National Golden Gloves title in four different weight classes. This is a first in the history of the tournament. The tournament has been held without interruption since 1928!!

Tramaine "Midget" Williams (Ring One) also secured his spot at the US Olympic Team Trials in the 123lbs. division. During the week of boxing, the New Haven, Connecticut native only lost on one judges card during one bout. If you don't know his pedigree, check out this past post about my favorite amateur boxer.

Mike Reed (Dream Team Boxing) has advanced to the championship of the 141lbs. 2011 National Golden Gloves Championship after defeating Cristino Ceballo 4-1. He will face George Rincon (Texas) Saturday night. A win gives Reed a spot at the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials later this summer. Jerry Odom (NoXcuse) won again at 178lbs. by stopping his opponent Julius Butler (St. Louis) and recording an amazing 3 straight stoppages this week. Antoine Douglas (ABC) lost tonight in the 165lbs. division to a tough Jesse Hart from Philadelphia. He attends the USOEC Program at Northern Michigan University. I don't have full results but I do know that Kevin Rivers (132lbs), Mike Reed (141lbs.), Antonio Russell (123lbs.), Antoine Douglas (165lbs.), Jerry Odom (178lbs.) won today to advance to the quarter finals of the 2011 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. The winners will secure a slot at the 2012 Olympic Team Box-offs to be held this summer in Colorado.

Also today, Maurice Adams (114lbs.) and 2010 defending National Golden Gloves Champion David Grayton (152lbs.) both lost.

Washington DC Golden Gloves Regional Results

Last night at the Waldorf Jaycees in Southern MD, the NC/VA Golden Gloves champions came up to our area to face off against a strong DC team and punch their tickets to the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions (April 25th - May 1st Indianapolis, Indiana).

I don't have the complete results, but I did watch most of the open division bouts and there was some great boxing displayed:

108 Pounds: Jeremy Morales, Norfolk, VA def. Lawrence Singh, Riverdale, MD - This was a pretty rough contest with both boxers being warned for holding. Morales's strength seemed to be the deciding factor.

114 Pounds: Maurice Adams was unopposed and advances to the national tournament.

123 Pounds: Gary Antonio Russell, Capitol Heights, MD def. Steven Zadien, Roanoke, VA - Turning in one of the best performances of night, Russell showed why he is one of the best boxers in the United States. Zadien was game and did his part to earn the only standing ovation from the crowd for the night, but Russell was too sharp and too fast Friday night.

132 Pounds: Kevin Rivers, Jr., Landover, MD def. Andre Hunter, Chesapeake, VA - Rivers looked like he was in trouble early from the physically stronger Hunter, but he settled down and eventually broke Hunter down with a relentless body attack and Hunter's corner stopped the bout.

141 Pounds: Michael Reed, Waldorf, MD def. Seth Billups, Ashburn, VA (Walkover) - I was really looking forward to watching Reed in action after seeing him defeat Ireland's 152lbs. National Champion Paddy Gallagher in DC last week-- but Billups could not compete.

152 Pounds: David Grayton, Washington, DC def. Moshea Aleem, Richmond, VA - Although Aleem defeated Grayton recently in the USA regionals, Grayton left no doubts about this one, imposing his will on Aleem throughout the bout.

165 Pounds: Antoine Douglas, Burke, VA def. D'Mitrius Ballard, Temple Hills, MD - By far the most anticipated bout of the night and possibly tournament featured two of the top boxers in the United States. Douglas moved up from 152lbs. but Douglas's speed seemed to be the difference and the power shots that he landed sealed the deal.

178 Pounds: Jerry Odom, Bowie, MD def. Antwan Ward, Gloucester, VA - Not Odom's best performance but he did enough to defeat Ward who attempted to box Odom and stay away from Odom's much-touted power. Ward accomplished that, but lost the bout.

I was unable to stay for the heavyweight and super-heavyweight bouts, but I'll update those when I get a chance.

Silver Medallist and 2010 National PAL 141lbs. runner-up Mike Reed (United States) and the current Irish U21 Champion, Irish Intermediate 69kg (152lbs.) Champion and 69kg (152lbs.) 2010 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Paddy Gallagher (Ireland) --from the 2011 Belfast-Beltway Classic from the Western Center in Washington, DC. Reed was named Outstanding Boxer for the night.

Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic was held at the Westin City Center Hotel in Washington, D.C. for the 3rd year. 2011 Silver Gloves Fight of the Tournament!

I don't do many editorial posts on this blog because I like to let the videos speak for themselves. However, ever once in a while, something special happens and that was the case this past week at the 2011 National Silver Gloves.

There were many great boxers this past week in Missouri battling for the #1 spot in the United States in their age and weight divisions, but one bout is undoubtedly still being discussed around the United States-- from California all the way to Florida. The "fight" that I'm talking about was between reigning 14/15 year-old 112lbs. National Silver Gloves and 114lbs. National Junior Olympic Champion Gary Salazar from California and the reigning 12/13 year-old 106lbs. National Silver Gloves Champion Neslan Machado from Florida. This time both competed in the 14/15 year-old 119lbs. division. Just to give you a better understanding of Salazar's talent level, in the National Junior Olympic Finals he defeated Shawn Simpson 15-3. Simpson then turned around 4 months later and won the 1st Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the National PAL as an open class boxer which means he faced adults as old as 34 years-old. With that victory, Simpson secured a spot in the box-offs that will determine our 2012 Olympic Boxing Team.

Machado is no slouch either. I first saw him at our Region 3 Tournament in North Carolina last year and after his first bout, I said that he was the hardest hitting 13 year-old that I had ever seen. At the National Silver Gloves, he continued to impress but it wasn't his ability during he bout that impressed me the most, it was the level of sportsmanship he showed immediately after. The heated contest included: hits to the back of the head by both boxers, a body slam, three standing 8-counts, the need for the referee to step between the boxers after the bell and a round break during which Machado refused to take a seat in the corner, instead pacing back and forth like a bull ready to fly out the gate. Not to mention the crowd who surrounded the combatants adding a Spartacus-like soundtrack to the backdrop.

It wasn't until the contest was over that I was most impressed. After the referee stopped the contest, Machado immediately walked over to Salazar's corner and congratulated him and his coaches with an embrace of respect. To those who are fans of amateur boxing, it is a customary sight after a contest, but even though I've seen this literally thousands of times, this stood out more than all the others because the contest was so heated. After the bout, I just had to get a picture of both of the young champions (see above). I'm sure the subject of this matchup will be on PPV within the next decade for one (or most likely both) of these boxers during the pre-fight vignette before Michael Buffer does his thing. DC Area Boxers Win 2011 National Silver Gloves!

DC Area boxers were nearly perfect this afternoon at the 2011 National Silver Gloves today winning 5 championship belts by the end of the day's competition: Steven Clark (10/11 110lbs.), Lorenzo Simpson (10/11 95lbs.), Jordan White (12/13 80lbs.), Shaka Williams (12/13 201+lbs.) and Ronnell Jackson(14/15 106lbs.) all won championship belts and are now the #1 boxers in the United States. By all accounts we should have had 6 as Troy Isley(12/13 90lbs.) lost a decision that was highly controversial to say the least. Video is to come of all except Jackson's bout and will be posted soon on this site.

DC area boxers competed in the first day of the 2011 National Silver Gloves, with four boxers advancing to the semifinals on Friday. In the 10/11 year-old division, Danardo Johnson lost his 90lbs. bout to Andres Borrego of Region 8. Also Donvon Eason lost his 60lbs. bout to Sean Garcia of Region 8.

In the 12/13 year-old division, 2009 National Silver Gloves Champion Jordan White defeated Region 8's Most Outstanding Boxer award winner Evan Sanchez in an 80lbs. contest. 3-time defending National Silver Gloves Champion Zimmie Dickinson def. Carlos Mendoza of Region 7 by RSC in the 1st round of their 95lbs. bout. Keegan Grove lost a decision to James Denson of Region 2 in the 112lbs. division. Troy Isley won his 90lbs against Wylie Tibbets from Region 7.

Ronnell Jackson won his 14/15 year-old 106lbs. bout against Aarkeyse Higdon of Region 2. Finally in the 165lbs. division, Daquan Johnson lost to Chandy Pattiwila of Region 8 and Lamont Roach lost his 125lbs. contest to Martin Urias of Region 8.

The 2011 National Silver Gloves Tournament will be held March 9-12 and the details have been released about the venue. The tournament, featuring the top 10-15 year old amateur boxers in the United States will be held at the Holiday Inn Sports Complex SE Waterpark Cocoa Key Resort, 9103 East 39th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Registration will be from 3 to 7p.m. on Wednesday the 9th with competition starting on March 10th.

National Silver Gloves To Be Held March 9-12

The National Silver Gloves will be held March 9-12 in Independence, Missouri after being postponed due to winter storms throughout the US. The venue will be near the original venue (Hilton Garden Inn) but the changed venue information will be posted on Ringside.com soon.

I'm glad the tournament is going to be held as it has been since 1968. To my knowledge the tournament has never had to be postponed until this year. Good luck to all the boxers and once the venue information is posted on Ringside's website, I will also post it here.

National Sivler Gloves Tournament Postponed Due to Weather

I just got off the phone with Ray Rogers and he said that the tournament is postponed and they are working on a new date now.

The site hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) has also been notified also and if you call they will tell you the same thing. This happened about 20 minutes ago.

The other day, I was looking through the records that I received in February 2010 from the late Lensy "LP" Lane. I was trying to figure out which boxers have had the most success in the history of the Silver Gloves and this is what I came up with. Now, keep in mind that I had to manually review all of the history, so if I missed any it is simply human error. I have records going back to 1985, but the tournament is in it's 43rd year (est. 1968).

The only boxer to ever win 6 years straight is Raushee Warren (Cincinatti, Ohio '98-'03).

DC Area Boxers Shine at Southeast Coast Silver Gloves

DC area boxers took the team trophy during the 3-day Southeast Coast Silver Gloves Tournament this week in Wilmington, N.C. with Florida and Virginia coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Virginia had it's best contingent of boxers in many years, sending 7 boxers to the Silver Gloves Nationals.

Six DC area boxers boxed their way into Saturday night's championships to join 9 other team members as the Washington, DC area is represented in 17 out of the 24 championshipmatchups.

Friday night Malik Warren (DC) started of the night with a victory of Anthony Brown (Florida) in the 10/11 year-old 65lbs. division. Juan Jenkins (DC) lost to Kavon Robertson (Virginia) in the 10/11 year-old 70lbs. division. Gregory Burton (DC) defeated Jermaine Fowler (Georgia) in the 10/11 year-old 85lbs. division.

The 12/13 year-old division started off with a victory by Zimmie Dickinson (DC) over Wesley Thompson (North Carolina) in the 95lbs. division. Denzel Jones (DC) lost to Troy Isley (Virginia) in the 12/13 year-old 90lbs. division. Kashif Brown (DC) lost to Tyshawn Wilson (Virginia) in the 12/13 year-old 125lbs. division. Keyshawn Williams (DC) lost to Israel Chavez North Carolina) in the last bout of the 12/13 year-old division.

Lamont Roach (DC) started the 14/15 year-old bouts off with a victor of Maliek Montgomery (Georgia) in a crowd favorite between the two tough boxers in the 125lbs. division. In the 14/15 year-old 201lbs. division Calvin Countess (DC) won via walkover over Shane Ferguson.

Last but not least Shaka Williams (DC) brought the crowd to their feet in a victory over Joseph Falotica (Florida). The most entertaining bout of the night by far.
